Transportation Engineer / Modeling and Analysis Intern

JOB DESCRIPTION: DVRPC is the Metropolitan Planning Organization of the Greater Philadelphia region with a population of 5.5 million. DVRPC’s Office of Modeling and Analysis maintains and applies computer models that are used to forecast future land use and future travel volumes on road, rail, and bus. The forecasts are used to evaluate the impacts and benefits of regional policies and transportation investments. The intern will assist in various tasks in the context of maintaining and applying these computer models. This kind of work requires good computer skills, an affinity to quantitative methods, and a strong interest in transportation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assists in the development, calibration, validation and application of transportation and land use models.

· Processes and analyzes data, including socio-economic and demographic data, geographic information, transit schedules, network data, traffic control information, traffic counts and surveys.

· Prepares input data for simulation models; codes transportation network data; tabulates and visualizes model outputs and compares results with actual current and historical data.

· Contributes text, tables, and graphics to various technical reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Strong interest in transportation planning and transportation policies.

· Proven record in the application of quantitative methods.

· Strong computer skills in areas such as data analysis, spreadsheet and database software, programming in a language like Python or VBA, geographic information systems (GIS).

· Specific knowledge in one of the following areas is a plus: travel demand modeling, traffic micro-simulation, highway capacity analysis, emergency evacuation planning. Also appreciated is experience with DVRPC’s preferred software tools: ArcGIS, Excel, Access, VISUM, VISSIM, SYNCHRO.

· Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

AVAILABILITY: This position requires a commitment of 37.5 hours per week.

Ideal start date - April 2012.

COMPENSATION: Work study; or paid at rates commensurate with level of education and skills.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & TRAINING: Must have completed at least THREE YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program (preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial interest or involvement in transportation engineering and planning.

Position Description:
The City of Philadelphia’s Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking academic interns to perform GIS work on several ongoing projects. Interns would work closely with staff from Parks and Recreation to assist with a variety of duties including data creation and management, cartographic design, and geographic analysis. The position is office based but may also include some field work in the park system. These opportunities are non-paying, academic internships that require a minimum of 20 hours per week service. Applicants must be available for an internship with a minimum of 12 weeks.

Applicant must be experienced in the use and operation of ESRI ArcGIS 10 and Microsoft Office; the methods, techniques and procedures used in the planning, design, maintenance, and production of geographic data and graphics; the principles, practices, and methods used in geographic data analysis. Interns must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and apply geographic principles and practices to the maintenance of a geodatabase. Applicant must be willing to work outside occasionally.

	The Task Force will give you the chance to: inform DVRPC's Board and staff of local issues and challenges; participate in public service in a meaningful way; address specific policy issues of concern to DVRPC; recommend potential projects to the Commission; offer recommendations regarding public engagement; share DVRPC information with your community and county; and network with a dynamic group of regional leaders and citizens. The Task Force is a group comprised of representatives selected from the general public, community and civic organizations, advocacy groups, professional associations, and the private sector. Twelve members of the Task Force will be chosen through an application/interview process. Applicants must reside within DVRPC's nine-county planning area. An interest in planning, as well as knowledge of regional issues, civic engagement, diversity of experience, and effective communication skills are also beneficial for membership. The Task Force's membership will be supplemented with 12 additional delegates, as appointed by the DVRPC Board, to guarantee geographic diversity. 10 Things Every Job Applicant Should Know

While there clearly are not enough jobs to go around, some people are getting hired. Every day, every hour, thousands of people are selected from thousands more who are ready, willing and able to work. The question is, why is it that some people get hired and some don’t?

I have an unusual perspective on this. I read several résumés a week. My human resources person reads hundreds. There are some obvious answers like education, connections, experience and even enthusiasm. But there is another reason that may be just as significant: bad résumé and interview skills, especially for applicants right out of school or someone who hasn’t interviewed in a long time. I can’t tell you how many times we have interviewed a recent college graduate who would surely get an F in Job Hunting 101.

As a parent of a soon-to-graduate student (last one, yippee!), I am thinking about the students and their parents as they enter the real world. I can easily imagine what these grads tell their parents when they can’t find a job: “No one is hiring!” “You don’t understand how competitive it is out there!” “I’m thinking of going to grad school!”

Poor dad. Poor mom. And I do mean poor. With the cost of college, parents can be forgiven for expecting their grads to be able to land a job. There’s no question that this has been as tough an economy as we’ve had in a long time, but again, even in the worst economy, some people do land jobs. Here’s my top 10 list of what you can do to improve your odds.

Review the résumé. Review it again. Have a grown-up review it. Would it surprise you to learn that a third of the résumés we get have misspellings? I just looked at one that listed the person’s address as Chicago, Ohio. She was from Ohio. An honest mistake? Sure. But it shows a lack of attention to detail, and it was the first of five careless mistakes. This was for a job that requires communicating with customers and putting proposals together. I don’t understand. Have these college graduates really not heard of spell check? If you have a pretty good idea that you can’t spell, why wouldn’t you have someone else look it over? Or do bad spellers only hang out with other bad spellers?
Show up on time for the interview. That means plan on getting there early. Look around. Look friendly.
Dress appropriately. O.K. This one is going to require some judgment. Don’t wear jeans (unless you’re applying at the Gap). Don’t look like you are on the way to the beach unless you are applying for a lifeguard job. You get the idea.
Know something about the company. Or, better yet, know a lot about the company. With the advent of the Internet and Web sites, many companies expect you to be familiar with what it is they do. They also expect that you will speak convincingly about why you would love to work at their company. You can do it.
Take internships seriously. It isn’t easy to find an internship. Many companies use them to develop a pool for prospective employees. We hired a paid intern to work in our gallery. She had a degree in art, was very outgoing and seemed to have an ability to sell. But she kept coming in late, even though she lived five minutes away. After several conversations, she still kept coming in late. We rode out the internship and wished her well. We hired someone else. There are very few art jobs out there. My new employee is very thankful. She has never been late.
Don’t just look for job postings. Target companies that you would like to work for and send them a résumé. Follow up. Send one to the H.R. person, the manager, the president. Include a beautifully written cover letter. Follow up. If you do this enough, you will find someone who just happens to be thinking about placing a job ad, and calling you may make this person’s life a little easier. Timing is everything, although persistence is important, too. Talk to friends and relatives about companies they know.
Think about things you have done in school, in a previous job, in a volunteer position that speak to your commitment, your ability to solve problems, your ability to deal with difficult customer situations, your ability to get a job done. Work it into your résumé and your interview responses.
Ask questions, especially when interviewers ask if you have any questions. If you don’t, you look unengaged, afraid or uninterested. And make them good questions about what you’ll be doing on the job. Don’t ask how much vacation time you get. The primary goal of the questions you ask is to get the job, not to decide if you want the job.
Think before you speak. This is a skill that most of us could improve. During one interview, I asked a young woman why a reference she had listed hadn’t had much to say about her. She immediately blurted out, “I’m difficult to work with!” Of course, I hired her immediately, because everyone wants to work with difficult people! (No, actually, I didn’t.)
Stay in touch. If you get to be a finalist for a position but don’t get it, suck it up. Don’t take it personally. The company clearly liked you, but you were edged out. It is not easy to pick between finalists, and many times it is very close. Ask if you can stay in touch. If you get an enthusiastic yes, be sure to do so. There is a good chance that the new hire won’t work out or that another position will open up. You are close!
Bonus! I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people burn bridges for no reason. That doesn’t necessarily mean telling off your boss on the way out. It is usually more subtle, like not giving notice, making disparaging remarks about the company to co-workers (who can’t wait to tell the boss) or exhibiting an I-don’t-care-anymore attitude. Be smart: if you give notice and the company chooses to keep you around, stay on your best behavior. Say good-bye to everyone. It will speak well of you, and it will be remembered. It can be the difference between getting a lukewarm reference or an enthusiastic one. That could easily make the difference in getting your next job.

It is more competitive than ever. Rise to the challenge. This may not help the unemployment rate, but it could help you. In Real World 101, that is the goal.

Job Opportunity: Project Assistant with Penn Institute for Urban Research

As part of a recent grant with Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER), Penn IUR is looking for a Project Assistant to help in carrying out its deliverables in the creation and population of a Knowledge-Sharing Platform (KSP) in the Energy Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI). This KSP, developed in collaboration with a host of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries, will be a repository of information and case studies related to energy efficiency and sustainability. The Project Assistant will produce and organize content for the KSP using original research and materials gathered from international ESCI partners. This position reports to Penn IUR’s Project Manager for Energy Initiatives as well as the Associate Director and Co-Directors.

Responsibilities
The Project Assistant’s responsibilities will include:

Surveying and developing relationships with ESCI’s Action Network of APEC countries to determine the structure and content of the KSP.
Gathering information and case studies to populate the KSP, while working with contributors to ensure the quality of external KSP submissions.
Original research and writing case studies to fill in knowledge gaps that may emerge in the KSP.
Development, testing and formatting of a template in conjunction with ESCI’s Action Network for recording information in the ESCI KSP.
Working with the Project Manager to find and edit KSP content, determine KSP structure, determine information gaps and strategize about outreach to the ESCI Action Network.
Performance of additional energy/sustainability-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree is required, as are strong writing and communication skills. Candidate should be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience with website development a plus. The ideal candidate has a proven interest in one or more of the following areas: energy, sustainability, environmental science, urban studies, international development and policy, government, and/or engineering.
Terms and Compensation
This is a temporary, hourly, grant-supported position that may be extended in accordance with grant renewals and/or new grant awards. This position is not eligible for employee benefits. Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience.

4. Create and maintain list serve of interested or supportive agencies/individuals.

5. Assist with the design system to track all referrals.

6. Complete monthly progress reports (collect data) - outreach activities and # participants.

7. Provide Link information to organizations throughout the county (i.e., Civic Organizations, Church Organizations, etc.).

8. Produce marketing materials to the targeted population (Aging & persons with disabilities).

9. Develop marketing opportunities to educate the public in general and the targeted population in particular about the services available for the targeted population.

10. Coordinate and set up cross trainings for the community and agencies.

11. Develop and maintain a service resource directory and computer link to the County Link Network to be used as an Information & Referral tool for the Participating Partners as well as other organizations that work with the targeted population.

12. Maintain open communication and participate in routine follow up with Link Regional Staff, OLTL Project Manager and others as needed.

13. Complete monthly financial updates in addition to quarterly and final expenditure reports

14. Continually strive for collaborative partners to streamline the intake, screening, and eligibility determination process for services.
